Helpdesk FAQ

From time to time, we'll answer a frequently asked questin (FAQ). Here's one: What do I need to know when shopping for a World-Wide Web connection?

Answer.

There are several checklist items, says Wayne Spivak, president of SBA.NET.WEB, an Internet and Web consulting firm in Bellmore, NY.

Examine the type of link the provider has to the Internet, such as a frame relay link or a T-1 or T-3 line. Learn the minimum speed link the provider supports between your Web browser and its Internet server.

Find out if the provider supports the Serial Line Internet Protocol (SLIP) and Point-to-Point Protocol. Ask if you get browser software for signing up. If not, do you have to buy a specific browser or can you choose your own?

Lastly, make sure you know what is covered in the monthly fee. How many connection hours do you get per month? How much is each additional hour?
